A student with a broadly based education, including a foreign language, will be better prepared to deal with changing technological, economic, and social conditions on an international scale. A student who minors in a foreign language may expect to develop sufficient competency to speak and write with reasonable accuracy and fluency while pursuing interest in language, literature, and culture. See the department for specific information on upper-division transfer work in the language of the minor.

All majors and minors in the department must earn a minimum grade of C (a grade of C- is not acceptable) in each upper-division course that carries the LARA, LASL, LCHI, LFRE, LGEN, LGER, LHEB, LITA, LJPN, LKOR, LRUS, or LSPA subject code.
