The undergraduate Certificate in Criminal Justice Spanish is designed for students who are preparing for a career in a criminal justice field. It is intended to develop intermediate-advanced-level, field-specific communication skills in Spanish. The courses in the certificate have a systematic focus on relevant linguistic and intercultural competence development aimed to provide students with the skills necessary for effective communication criminal justice contexts. The certificate adopts a practical, task-based approach to language learning and instruction.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the certificate, students will be able to: 

  1. Describe the US criminal justice system organizational principles, main stakeholders, and events, and compare them to those in Latin America. 
  2. Navigate the series of interactive tasks related to each common criminal justice case type. 
  3. Demonstrate appropriate intermediate-advanced proficiency language skills to complete all communicative tasks associated with typical case resolution processes. 
  4. Investigate and analyze the role of language access in the just resolution of common criminal justice cases in the US. 
  5. Demonstrate intercultural awareness and adaptability by recognizing bias, avoiding stereotypes, and practicing empathy, openness, and self-awareness.
