The undergraduate Certificate in Medical Spanish is designed for students who are preparing for a career in healthcare, as well as for practicing professionals in these and related fields. It is intended to develop intermediate-advanced-level, field-specific communication skills in Spanish. The courses in the certificate have a systematic focus on relevant linguistic and intercultural competence development aimed to provide students with the skills necessary for effective communication in health and medical contexts. The certificate adopts a practical, task-based approach to language learning and instruction.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the certificate, students will be able to:

  1. Describe and evaluate key health conditions and healthcare practices in the U.S. and Latin America, including system structures, attitudes toward preventative care, and the role of traditional medicine.
  2. Analyze the impact of social, cultural, and linguistic factors on healthcare access and communication for Spanish-speaking populations.
  3. Exhibit intermediate-advanced proficiency in medical Spanish for clinical interviews and interactions.
  4. Communicate effectively in Spanish in healthcare/medical contexts.
